Today was Marion Lawrence's funeral. It was the most beautiful, God glorifying funeral I've ever attended. At the end, we sang the hymn Victory in Jesus. Any of you that know me very well, knows that I do not like southern gospel type hymns, but you know... you can't NOT love this one. Many of them have annoying tunes, but the words are amazing. The words in this one are full of spiritual truths and beautiful doctrine. I decided that I will stop griping about it when we sing it in church from now on and enjoy the gloriousness of it.
And... I wanted to share it with you all.
I heard an old, old story, How a Savior came from glory, How He gave His life on Calvary To save a wretch like me; I heard about His groaning, Of His precious blood's atoning, Then I repented of my sins; And won the victory.
Chorus: O victory in Jesus, My Savior, forever. He sought me and bought me With His redeeming blood; He loved me ere I knew Him, And all my love is due Him, He plunged me to victory, Beneath the cleansing flood.
I heard about His healing, Of His cleansing power revealing. How He made the lame to walk again And caused the blind to see; And then I cried, "Dear Jesus, Come and heal my broken spirit," And somehow Jesus came and brought To me the victory.
Chorus.
I heard about a mansion He has built for me in glory. And I heard about the streets of gold Beyond the crystal sea; About the angels singing, And the old redemption story, And some sweet day I'll sing up there The song of victory.
Chorus.

Great words...I'm not familiar with this one! I'll have to look it up on the internet and see if I can find the tune. I may recognize it if I hear it.
You mean you didn't like it before when we sang it in church?Submitted by rlrippee on Sat, 2008-02-16 12:56.
It is one of the sad things about more recent Christian songwriting that there are not many songs written about heaven and glory at this time.
One thing that the old southern gospel songs did well was rejoice in the hope of glory.
Soon and Very Soon, What a Day That Will Be, Victory in Jesus, In the Sweet By and By.
But it was a joy to sing at the funeral service. After all, it was not just a grieving time, but also a celebration

Ryan,
I didn't like that song AT ALL when I first heard it at our July service at the Griffith's. I remember thinking "who on earth picked this honky tonk song?!" But I admit, after singing it yesterday and really reading and then meditating on the words... I have fallen in love with it. Although the tune still needs to grow on me more. :)
