It amazes me sometimes, how God uses my conversations with E&R to remind me of how good His love is and how much He cares for ME.
Today we were driving to our friend's house in Tracy and we like to have lots of interesting conversations on long car rides. I made a comment about Jesus dying on the cross for us, so that we could live our lives to bring glory to Him and spend Eternity with Him, from sin, guilt and shame. Ethan thought about this for a while and then said "so... after Jesus died on the cross... what did you need to do for Him?" I wondered if he was asking me how I paid Him back, so I went down that path of explaining God's free gift. A few more minutes go by, while he sits in his seat thinking... "so then, He died for my sins and I don't need to give him a present?" :) I explain to Ethan that the way we thank God is by taking the free gift He's offered and loving and serving God with all of our heart, soul and mind.
I would say about 10 minutes goes by and this is his response to what I've told him. "Okay, so... Jesus died on the cross for me and then rose from the grave so I could live in eternal life with Him?" I'm thrilled he's getting it, so I quickly answer "yep!"
"and He doesn't want me to buy him anything, like a new Hot Wheels car or a coffee from Starbucks?" (ok, this made me laugh-out-loud)
When I replied with "that's right!" his answer is what got me.
"wow! that is like, the very best gift you could ever get on any birthday or ANY day, ever!!"
why can't I always see things so clearly?

its in those moments I say quick and earnest prayers, asking God to give Ethan that true, saving faith! I'm always quick to go write these little conversations in his journal, so that when he's struggling through those odd teen years, he can remember the things that used to bring him such joy as a little boy. :)
